Chrysler has released details on the 2011 Dodge Charger Pursuit Police car, which will be used by some states in the US. The base version will have a 3.6-liter V6 or 5.7-liter Hemi V8. The cars are of course outfitted with heavy duty brakes and suspension, strengthened chassis, and whatever else a police car needs (like flashing lights). The car will be available for order next month.

They put out about 550-600hp with 7-liter hemi-head engines. Dodge/Plymouth ran Chrysler’s 426 Hemi and Ford/Mercury ran the Boss 429. Though the stock versions were officially rated lower, in reality both engines put out 450-500hp (gross) and upwards of 500lb-ft of torque in stock trim.

The once-sleepy police-car market is heating up. Chrysler’s Dodge division is rolling out a version of its coming 2011 Charger called the Pursuit that has a suspension set up for better handling and an electronic stability control system specially calibrated to keep the car under control during chases.

In a development that may be more important to some officers, the car is roomy and has a smooth, comfortable ride for long days behind the wheel, Dodge says. After all, police cars are used more as mobile offices than as assault and pursuit vehicles. Indeed many departments’ have tight budgets that make fuel economy more vital than horsepower. The Charger Pursuit is available with a V6 or more powerful V8 engine.
